RATINGS

100The Wine Advocate

...bombastic notes of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries and wild blueberries with hints of cardamom, lilacs, incense and fragrant earth, leading into wafts of pencil shavings and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, elegant and yet so, so intense, it has layers of bright crunchy fruit and mineral sparks galore, framed by exquisitely ripe, finely pixelated tannins, finishing very long and energetic. Wowsers.

100Jeb Dunnuck

...extraordinary notes of pure crème de cassis and blackberry-scented fruits intermixed with lots tobacco leaf, lead pencil, spice, and hints of flowers...hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, and a blockbuster of a finish.

99Vinous / IWC

...stunning intensity. A powerful, regal wine...possesses off the charts richness and layers of flavor that build into a dizzying crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. Bittersweet chocolate, mocha, spice and licorice accents are laced into a core of dark red cherry and plum fruit.

96Wine Spectator

Very pure...racy cassis, plum and blackberry coulis flavors, this moves along authoritatively while staying relatively light on its feet, with violet, savory and iron threads lining the mouthwatering finish. Beautifully rendered wine...

94James Suckling

...polished nose of black cherry, blueberry pie, vanilla and crushed gravel. Evolves to charred wood and dried lavender...medium-to full-bodied with firm, sleek tannins. There’s freshness to the finish with hints of blackcurrant leaf.

17.5Jancis Robinson

Woodsy, rocky, with a lavender florality, blackberry, dried earth, oak bark, mulch, and powdery fine-grained tannin. An elegant, balanced wine.

PRODUCER

Spottswoode

Spottswoode Vineyard & Winery was founded 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Jack Novak. The couple produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. Located on a historic 19th century estate which still includes picturesque Victorian buildings, Spottswoode owns 35 acres of vineyards planted primarily in Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Spottswoode’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery’s premier wine, and it earns accolades from reviewers and collectors. The winery is still owned and operated by the Novak family. About 5,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley are produced each year.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
