RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

In addition to the wealth of raspberry and red currant flavors and the wonderfully sweet new oak, it is extremely well balanced...tannins are luxurious, the acid crisp and fine, the complexity a delight and the finish dry and long. This full-bodied selection offers refinement and intellectual appeal.

94+ Jeb Dunnuck

...gorgeous...meaty and layered, with copious sweet red and black fruits, pepper, bacon fat, underbrush, and wild flower-like qualities all showing on the nose. Seamless, pure, and incredibly polished on the palate, with an elegant texture, solid concentration, bright acidity, and no hard edges...has brilliant fruit that gushes through on the palate.

92Wine Spectator

An intense red, with pure, rich dark berry, spice, espresso and cedar flavors that are complex, ending with firm tannins and notes of crushed rock. Gains depth and dimension even as the tannins close in.

90Vinous / IWC

Dark berries, cherry, licorice and woodsmoke on the nose, with complicating notes of allspice and flowers. Smooth, rich and silky in texture, offering sweet red and dark berry preserve flavors and a hint of candied violet. Finishes with very good sweetness, soft tannins and lingering spice and smoke qualities.

REGION

United States, California, South Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez Valley

Santa Ynez Valley AVA is home to more wineries than any other area in Santa Barbara County. The appellation was established in 1983 and it includes a total of 76,800 acres, of which 1,500 acres are vineyards. Chardonnay is the dominant grape in this appellation, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. The appellation runs east and west with temperatures and microclimates changing significantly from warmer in the east to cool by the time the district gets close to the Pacific Ocean. In recent years Rhone-style wines have been successfully made here, and vineyards now are also planted to Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Mourvedre and Marsanne.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
