RATINGS

93James Suckling

Graphite, cherries and chocolate here with a well-built palate that adds cocoa powder and blood plums to the mix. Terrific resolve and depth. Full of lively fruit.

92Owen Bargreen

...aromatics of milk chocolate, black cherry preserves and suggestions of wild blackberry pie. This is lithe while maintaining wonderful mid-palate weight and mouthfeel. There are ripe flavors of milk chocolate, black cherry preserves and suggestions of roasted dates.

91The Wine Advocate

...complex, nuanced bouquet of ripe black fruits, charcoal, smoke tobacco and licorice. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, supple, pure and polished red that's impeccably balanced and shines for its drinkability...a beautiful wine.

91Stephen Tanzer

Dark fruit aromas are complicated by licorice, violet, bitter chocolate, tobacco and black tea nuances... Juicy, fresh and tight-grained, conveying a silky mouth feel but a lively high pitch to its dark berry, spice and floral flavors. A hint of smoked meat adds complexity. This nicely delineated, firmly structured wine finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins that spread out horizontally on the lingering, perfumed finish.

90Wine Spectator

Refined and polished, this red has good structure, showing notes of red and dark berry, with accents of tobacco and spice that build toward integrated tannins.

90Wine Enthusiast

...notes of spice, plum, herb and cherry. The palate is considerably more giving, showing a pleasing sense of balance and length.

REGION

United States, Washington, Columbia Valley

Columbia Valley AVA is larger than some states. At 18,000 square miles, or 11 million acres, the appellation covers almost half of Washington State and a small part of Oregon on the south side of the Columbia River. Established in 1984, Columbia Valley contains numerous sub appellations within its boundaries, including Yakima Valley AVA and Walla Walla AVA, both large and important wine districts. Columbia Valley AVA, generally called the Columbia Basin by Pacific Northwesterners, is in the Columbia River Plateau, and the AVA also includes a section of northeastern Oregon. There are dozens of microclimates within this appellation of about 7,000 vineyard acres. Many kinds of grapes are grown in the Columbia Valley, though the principal grapes planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Eastern Washington experiences very hot summers and cold winters, and the northern latitude means that Washington vineyards receive several more hours of sun in the summer than California vineyards. Grapes in Washington therefore have time to develop significant tannins and overall ripeness.
