...one of the all-time greats made at this estate... ...dense purple color, an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, creme de cassis, black fruits... ...unctuous texture... ...seamless integration of acidity, wood, tannin...
Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, yellow rose, Asian spices and vanilla bean. Deep and sweet but remarkably precise, offering powerful dark berry and kirsch flavors.
Sweetly ripe but great balance. Red-pepper powder – paprika. Dusty. But great fluidity.
...copious aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, spice box, and a touch of oak. Well-balanced, dense, pure, layered, and rich, its big, rich style is similar to the 2003.
Spicy, high-pitched aromas of red- and blackcurrant, cherry, pipe tobacco, rose and smoky Indian spices. Firm, mineral-driven dark berry flavors are given a firm edge by bitter cherry skin and pit notes, with the tobacco note repeating.
Rich and glossy on the nose – all pleasure! There’s a sweet initial hit on the palate and then it all goes very dense and still dry. Very, very youthful.
68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc
A complex, heady bouquet displays red- and blackcurrant, pipe tobacco, cigar box and rose oil, with suave spiciness gaining strength in the glass. Sappy and sweet, with mineral-laced red and dark berry preserve and cherry-vanilla flavors...
...dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by attractive aromas of incense, red and black currants, spice, and forest floor... ...very pretty effort made in a lighter, more elegant, restrained style...
...classic cigar box, cedar, tobacco leaf and dill scents to the tight band of mineral, dried currant, sage, cedar and sandalwood notes. Full-bodied, elegant and persistent, this is most interesting on the finish...
...striking... ...decidedly muscular Monte Bello endowed with layers of dark fruit. Tobacco, mint, asphalt and crushed rocks develop in the glass, adding tons of complexity and finesse. A long, saline finish rounds things out beautifully...

I love the nose to this wine. Aromas of currants, blackberry, flowers and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with super refined tannins and a long gorgeous finish. This is all in finesse and length.
Very tight, dense, tense and firm, with aromas of road tar, dried currant and dried tobacco leaf offering plenty of enticement, picking up gamy earth and black licorice notes. Retains its trim, narrow band of flavors and focus.
...an especially huge, intense Monte Bello, yet a sexy, silky core of fruit lies within its imposing frame. Everything comes together in this glorious, radiant wine.
Fresh & precise, offering deeply concentrated red berry & bitter cherry flavors, a supple texture & slow-building sweetness. Becomes more exotically floral with air, finishing sappy & long, with excellent clarity and gentle tannic grip.
Taut and structured, with cedar-laced currant, dark berry and dried berry notes joining a mix of mineral-laced fresh earth and tobacco flavors, offering a wide range of tight-knit fruit overall. Firmly tannic on the finish...
...combines pure structure and power in a rich, full-bodied style for this wine. Waves of dark red fruit, crushed rocks, flowers, mint and grilled herbs wrap around the long, insistent finish...
Intense cherry, blackcurrant, licorice, pipe tobacco and cedary oak aromas show superb clarity and energy. Sweet, penetrating cherry-cola and bitter chocolate flavors are deeply concentrated but lively, picking up woodsmoke, floral...
...shows beautifully, even next to some of the more important vintages... Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, spices & graphite form an attractive core of flavors & textures... sage, lavender & black fruits add the final shades of nuance...
...tobacco, grilled herbs, smoke, incense and plums melding together in this soft, beautifully textured Monte Bello. The 2011 is a wine of exceptional textural finesse... 88% Cabernet Sauvignon is the highest since the 1980s.
Seamless and voluptuous through to the finish...Raspberry jam, pomegranate, white flowers, mint and spices are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass...silky tannins, no hard edges and exceptional overall balance,
...classic black cherry, crushed violets, cassis, espresso roast & crème brulee notes all flowing seamlessly to a full-bodied, concentrated, structured & layered Bordeaux blend that has bright acidity, a stacked mid-palate and firm tannin.
A beautifully structured wine, with firm acidity and tannins that show grip and grit amid a core of dense, tense currant and blackberry fruit, turning juicy. Those seeking classic old-school Cabernet will embrace this.
They say this has more tannin than first growths. Already a pleasure! Must be made with extraordinary skill. Heady, balsam notes. Really sophisticated with no sweetness nor alcohol. Great cleanliness on the end.
...bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, rich espresso roast, cigar wrapper, subtle black truffle and burning embers...full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with a lavishly textural attack that segues into a stunningly layered, richly structured mid-palate endowed with incredible depth and concentration underpinned by succulent acids. The finish is long, vibrant and beautifully delineated.
Amazing aromas of flowers, blackberry, black currant and spices. Purple fruits. Full body, very dense and rich... Tannic and so fresh. The Monte Bello magic is here. Great to taste...
...utterly spellbinding in its beauty. Finely sculpted and chiseled, with super-expressive aromatics and searing tannins, shaping up to be a modern-day classic. Remarkably pure & vibrant for such a big wine... Quite simply a must-have wine.
...plush tannins pull a well of blackberry and plum fruit along, while smoldering toast and a latent mineral edge linger through the superlong finish.
Very Cabernet nose, again with spice – great polish and depth. Firm acidity and much more obvious tannins than the 2014.
Unique aromas of blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate and walnut. Full body, very powerful and tannic. Incredible depth and power. Precise and so focused. Muscular. Great structure.
...wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins...
The 2014 Monte Bello is bright, precise & finely sculpted throughout with a slightly more reddish leaning flavor profile than is found in some of the surrounding vintages. In 2014, Monte Bello is built on bright, pulsating acidity & energy.
...sage, mint and spice notes leading off, followed by a dense core of black and red currant fruit and a long, smoldering finish.
Lots of ripe fruit with a black olive overlay and a very dry finish.
...will soon take its place among the greatest Monte Bellos ever made. Powerful, deep & explosive... magnificent concentration & richness in every dimension. Even with all of its raciness, it has terrific aromatic presence & regal tannins.
...beautiful purity in its crème de cassis, blueberry, white flowers, and vanilla bean, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and perfect balance.
...bursting from the glass with aromas of crushed currants, plums, charcoal, sweet spices, black truffle and rich soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, immensely deep and very concentrated...
Red cherry jam, raspberry jam, menthol and rose petal all grace this exquisite, vivid Monte Bello.
So intense the fruit seems to engulf you. Deep, deeply sweet with that American oak spice. Thickly sweetly textured but the tannins are very fine.
Pure perfection... ...a sensational effort from this estate... ...saturated purple-hued beauty is legendary Monte Bello in the making and has a stunning yet primordial bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, chocolate, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied, incredibly powerful, and one of the most concentrated versions of this cuvée ever made (I've had most of them)… ...will have 50-60 years of overall longevity... (August 2020)
...youthfully complex notes of ripe plums, cassis, espresso roast and black truffles, with little apparent trace of its time in 100% new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied and incredibly concentrated, with a rich, layered mid-palate and immense substance that marks it out as the most richly tannic...acids are vibrant...
...heady, opulent wine, the 2017 also has tons of supporting structure to balance things out. Layers of dark red/purplish fruit give the 2017 remarkable primary intensity, with hints of licorice, mocha, dried flowers and menthol that build over time, hinting at the wine's ultimate potential. Sensual and exotic, but with plenty of tannic clout, the 2017 has a very bright future. Today, it is decidedly explosive. (September 2020)
Distinctive, with vibrant flavors of violet, juniper and anise out front, backed by a core of intense dark currant, plum and cherry fruit. Firmly grounded, showing serious cut and drive through the bay leaf– and sage-accented finish, which sports ample toast alongside the fruit and floral elements.
...dark and black fruit, such as blackcurrants, as well as walnuts and hints of vanilla. Full-bodied with creamy tannins that are there from start to finish... Beautiful length. Really pure and focused.
...a wine of extraordinary finesse... Lavender, mocha, spice, licorice and dried flowers all develop in a sublime, refined Monte Bello... This is an especially elegant, lithe vintage...
...boysenberry, blueberry jam, blackcurrant, dark chocolate-covered cherries, cigar box, graphite, loamy earth and oodles of floral character. The palate is medium to full-bodied and packed full of flavor layers, knit by very fine, ripe, pixelated tannins and great freshness and finishing very long.
