RATINGS

93Robert M. Parker Jr.

With more graphite, blueberry and lilac notes, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and an elegant, gracious feel... It looks to be a beauty in a Bordeaux style, with sweet tannins but loads of fruit – unmistakably California but French...

93Wine Spectator

Offers a mix of tight, structured cedar, graphite, pure black cherry, currant and wild berry flavors, with touches of anise and crushed rock, ending with firm, ripe tannins and good length.

93Stephen Tanzer

Complex nose melds briary black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and wild herbs. Concentrated, lush and intense, with very good purity to the nicely delineated dark fruit, spice and floral flavors. A hint of wild herbs.

But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
