RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

...extremely aromatic, expressive and open...elegant style, with less rusticity, and the tannins are fine-grained, present and quite abundant but also quite round. It has a great mouthfeel, with the wild berry, aromatic herbs and spicy flavors lingering in your mouth.

94Vinous / IWC

Powerful, highly perfumed aromas of fresh dark fruits and incense; sexy oak spice, mineral and woodsmoke flourishes add complexity. Sweet, broad and palate-caressing, offering intense blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors enlivened by an undercurrent of juicy acidity and a suggestion of peppery spices. Concentrated yet lively in character, showing excellent clarity and lift. Smooth, even tannins blend seamlessly with the juicy fruit.

94James Suckling

Strong character here. Attractive violets and wet-earth notes with very dark, glossy and rich dark plums and cherries. The richness of the blood-plum flavor is impressive, the palate very plush and very smoothly rendered. Power with freshness and terrific tannin depth.

93Wine Enthusiast

...brambly, leathery black fruit aromas and smoky oak...tastes dark and toasty, with spicy berry and cassis flavors that push up against desiccated and raisiny.

90Wine Spectator

Sanguine, espresso and loamy earth flavors...core of currant and licorice notes. Solid tannins and balsamic acidity provide an ironclad structure. Old-school, balanced and deep.

18Jancis Robinson

...superbly complex with fireside smoke, fresh cherry and sweet vanilla spice. Beautifully done, with fruit that combines candy and stewed character with a lovely freshness. Super-fine tannins, full body but no excess baggage.

REGION

Spain, Castilla-Leon, Toro

Toro is a relatively small appellation with a rapidly rising reputation. Located in the province of Zamora near the northeastern corner of Portugal, Toro has 13,000 vineyard acres with appellation status. Like most of the region it sits on a high plateau of sand, clay and lime where summers are hot and dry and winters are harsh. The main red grape here is the local clone of Tempranillo, called Tinta de Toro, and Garnacha. The white grapes Verdejo and Malvasia are also grown. Most of the reds are 100% Tinta de Toro. The devastating 19th century phylloxera crisis, which killed grapevines throughout Bordeaux, did not reach Toro, thanks, it is thought, to Toro’s sandy soil. Toro later exported some of its healthy vines to France. Toro also has vineyards of pre-phylloxera vines, meaning that some special cuvées from Toro are made from vines that are more than 150 years old. The Toro DO was created in 1987. The legendary Bodega Numanthia is in the Toro appellation.
