RATINGS

94+ The Wine Advocate

...gives up fragrant black pepper, crushed rocks, Provence herbs and black olive notes with a core of baked black cherries, preserved plums and blackberries plus a waft of charcuterie. Full-bodied, the palate packs a wallop but also possesses great poise, featuring very ripe, rounded tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing long and savory.

93Wine Spectator

Combines torque and polish, with a complex backbone wrapped in expressive blackberry, smoky pepper meat and licorice flavors that build richness toward refined tannins.

93+ Jeb Dunnuck

...offers a more mineral/iron slant in its meaty red and black fruits, and it's rich, structured, and concentrated on the palate.

91-94Vinous / IWC

...deep, powerful and intense... Plush and dense, with tons of layers...built on a core of concentrated fruit. Black cherry, chocolate, leather and spice fill out the wine's ample, large-scaled frame.

91Wine Enthusiast

Black pepper and blueberry meet with tarragon, sweet mint and beef char on the nose...palate offers a range of minty herbal qualities, but is dominated by a black-plum-sauce richness...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a 12-mile long, narrow strip of an appellation wedged along the eastern hillsides of the Santa Lucia mountain range. Given its proximity to Big Sur and the Gabilan Mountain Range to the northeast, Santa Lucia a cool-climate wine growing district. Morning sun is often followed by maritime winds and fog in the afternoon, a weather pattern that prolongs the growing season and means long, gentle ripening of the grapes. Spanish missionaries planted vineyards in the district in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that modern winemakers planted vineyards and began making high quality wine. The district received AVA status in 1991 and today there are 6,000 vineyard acres in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape planted, followed by Chardonnay and Riesling.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
