RATINGS

94James Suckling

...a wonderful wine with orange peel, chocolate, currant and blackberries. Full and round with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Very fine. Best ever.

94Wine Enthusiast

...shows immense density and richness, and it exudes bright tones of cherry, blackberry, chocolate, tar, clove and licorice...bouquet is elegant and complex, but the smoothness of the mouthfeel is what sets this wine apart.

91The Wine Advocate

...wraps around the palate with blackberries, smoke, licorice and new leather. Layers of flavor develop on the mid-palate, leading to the dark, brooding, totally explosive finish.

91+ Vinous / IWC

Smoky red cherry and peony aromas are complicated by ink, cocoa and herbs on the aromatic nose. Then creamy and superripe in the middle, with a hint of game adding complexity to the chocolatey red berry and underbrush flavors. Finishes with utterly suave, mounting tannins.

90Wine Spectator

A rich and supple texture up front paves the way for cherry, blackberry and violet flavors. As this finishes, the firm structure takes over... Fine length.

16Jancis Robinson

...starts all alluring and velvety and there is ripe fruit on the mid palate...

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a tiny village just inland from the western Tuscan coast with a storybook renaissance castle but no train station. To wine enthusiasts, however, Bolgheri DOC is perhaps Italy’s most exciting wine appellation. It is the cultural heart of the Maremma, the coastal stretch of Tuscany where some of the first Super Tuscans were produced commercially in the late 1960s. Various members of the legendary Antinori wine dynasty and other influential producers established estates in Bolgheri starting in the 1970s, creating such Super Tuscans as Guado Al Tasso and Ornellaia. Bolgheri was awarded DOC status in 1983. Red, white and dessert wines are made in this appellations, and many of the most renowned are the Super Tuscans made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and other red varietals. The white wines are blends of Vermentino and Trebbiano. The reds are notable for being blends that have a distinctive Tuscan terroir.
