RATINGS

94James Suckling

A rich, layered Amarone with lots of fruit. Bright, sliced dried citrus to the ripe and juicy fruit. It’s full-bodied and compact with a beautiful finish and transparency.

93Vinous / IWC

Roses, blackberries, savory herbs and a hint of spiced citrus make for an alluring bouquet...velvety in texture, ushering in a creamy wave of ripe red and black fruits, laced with salty minerals, as dark inner florals amass toward the close...

92The Wine Advocate

...reveals a dark and savory side...angular and strong with dried fruit, black cherry, leather, toasted spice and tarry smoke.

90Wine Spectator

A compact Amarone with an overtone of cured tobacco, defined by crisp tannins tightly meshed to flavors of steeped cherry, dried raspberry and minerally hints of smoke and loamy earth.

90Wine Enthusiast

...whiffs of stewed prune, leather and tilled earth. The solid palate offers baked plum, candied raisin and a dollop of vanilla alongside polished, rather relaxed tannins before a bitter almond finish.

16Jancis Robinson

Sweet, dusty nose with sweet red cherries on the palate...

REGION

Italy, Veneto, Amarone della Valpolicella

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, usually called simply Amarone, was awarded its prestigious DOCG appellation status in 2009. Though lush, high alcohol content red wines have been made in the Veneto since the ancient Greeks settled there, the popularity of Amarone over the last few decades has resulted in international demand for the wine. Amarone is typically made from 45% to 95% Corvina, blended with Rondinella and other indigenous grapes. The blend is essentially the same as for Valpolicella, but Amarone is made from dried grapes, which gives it a rich, viscous quality and an alcohol content between 14% and 20%. Though Amarone is a dry wine, there is a sweet version called Recioto della Valpolicella. The recioto style wines are included in the DOCG, and the word “ripasso” on label usually indicates the sweeter style.
