RATINGS

96Robert M. Parker Jr.

...classic notes of cedar and lead pencil shavings...back currants and licorice...full-bodied mouthfeel with fabulous precision and density...long, silky finish with moderately high tannins...should drink beautifully for 30+ years.

93James Suckling

A wine with an intense sous bois, fresh tobacco and dried flower character on the nose and palate. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and an attractive finish.

91Wine Spectator

Well-polished, with sleek edges to the fleshy plum, cassis and blackberry fruit...finish is embedded with black licorice and violet notes. Approachable now, but the stuffing is there to cellar this for a bit. Drink now through 2025.

17Jancis Robinson

Delicately sweet dark fruit. Hint of blueberry and vanilla. Then drier and less obvious on the palate. Fine grained and unexpectedly juicy on the finish. (JH)

REGION

France, Bordeaux, Pauillac

Pauillac is Bordeaux’s most famous appellation, thanks to the fact that it is home to three of the region’s fabled first-growth châteaux, Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild and Latour. Perched on the left bank of the Gironde River north of the city of Bordeaux, Pauillac is centered around the commune of Pauillac and includes about 3,000 acres of vineyards. The Bordeaux classification of 1855 named 18 classified growths, including the three above mentioned First Growths. Cabernet Sauvignon is the principal grape grown, followed by Merlot. The soil is mostly sandy gravel mixed with marl and iron. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that “the textbook Pauillac would tend to have a rich, full-bodied texture, a distinctive bouquet of black currants, licorice and cedary scents, and excellent aging potential.”
