RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

They hit the nail on the head with the harvest date of the 2016 Las Lamas, and the wine shows incredible precision, elegance and symmetry this year.

95Vinous / IWC

...hugely perfumed and complex bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, candied flowers, exotic spice, licorice and smoky minerals. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering densely packed black raspberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and lavender flavors that show outstanding delineation and back-end power. The mineral and floral notes drive an extremely long, energetic finish that leaves an alluring dark berry preserve note behind.

94-95James Suckling

...fragrant cherry, dry earth and wild herb nose. Quite sleek, but impressive concentration, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity that are already beautifully married on the long filigree finish.

17Jancis Robinson

...softer, more delicate version of this wine, but with a bit of herbaceous expression too...texture is all about gentleness and velvet. Once opened, a floral touch comes out initially. At the extreme edge of the finesse, each vintage has less texture and continues to look for the essence.

REGION

Spain, Castilla-Leon, Bierzo

Bierzo is small, with about 9,500 vineyard acres, and centers around the city of Ponferrado. Located on the same northeastern plain as most of Castilla y Léon, it nevertheless enjoys a climate somewhat similar to Galicia, which means that Bierzo gets more rainfall and milder winter weather than other parts of the region. The primary grape here is Mencia, which is thought to be related to Cabernet Franc. Garnacha Tintorera and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted in small amounts. White wines are made from Godello (Verdelho), Malvasia and Doña Blanc and Palomino. Though white wines are produced much less than reds, Godellos are gaining international popularity as full-bodied, floral white wines. The appellation status for Bierzo was awarded in 1989.
