1962 Domaine Marey-Monge Romanee-St. Vivant

Domaine Marey-Monge was owned by the Marey-Monge family starting in the late 18th century, when the conclusion of the French Revolution meant that vineyards and other property owned by the church was sold into private hands. Romanee-St.-Vivant was just such a vineyard. It was originally owned by the Abbey of St.-Vivant but was later acquired by the Marey-Monge family. In 1960 the family began leasing the majority of the vineyard to Domaine Romanee Conti and in 1988 DRC acquired the parcel they had been leasing.

Romanee-Saint-Vivant is a 23-acre Grand Cru vineyard just on the northern edge of the commune of Vosne-Romanee in the Cote de Nuits. The vineyard faces east, has a gentle incline and an elevation of 250 to 265 meters. The soil is clay and limestone. Principal producers of Romanee-Saint-Vivant are Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, with 13.23 acres; Leroy, with 2.48 acres; and Domaine de Corton-Grancey/Louis Latour, with 1.9 acres.

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.

Domaine Marey Monge farmed out the Romanee St. Vivant vineyard to Domaine De La Romanee-Conti starting in 1966. In 1988 Domaine De La Romanee-Conti bought Domaine Marey Monge.
