PRODUCER

Premiere Napa Valley Auction

Premiere Napa Valley is an annual barrel tasting and wine auction open only to the wine and beverage trade. Held each February in St. Helena, Calif., the auction is sponsored by Napa Valley Vintners, a professional association of 250 Napa Valley wineries. Proceeds from the auction support the organization’s educational and other programs. The auction is an important event in the wine industry because members make special cuvées for the auction. Winemakers make a barrel or less of their auction cuvées. Premiere Napa Valley wines, which are Cabernet Sauvignons or other red varietals, are not widely available to the public. Restaurateurs and retailers who purchase these cuvées market them as the “best of the best.” As part of our commitment to bringing rare and fine wines to our customers, WineBid.com participates in the Premiere Napa Valley auction and each year purchases a cuvée which we offer exclusively through our auctions.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Oakville AVA is one of the two or three most prestigious appellations in the United States. Located in the heart of Napa Valley, its 5,000 vineyard acres produce some of the world’s most acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, including such California “cult” Cabs as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Before those boutique producers rose to fame in the 1990s, Oakville was already renowned as home to Robert Mondavi, Opus One and Groth Vineyards, among others. Along with the famous wineries, there are premier vineyards in this AVA, including Martha’s Vineyard and To Kalon Vineyard. To Kalon was first planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb, one of California’s first viticultural researchers, and he named the vineyard after the ancient Greek phrase for “most beautiful.” Though many grapes can be successfully grown in Oakville, Cabernet Sauvignon is king. Merlot and Chardonnay are also frequently planted. Oakville Cabs are prized for their richness, complexity and weight. Oakville was designated as an AVA in 1993.

VINTAGE

2012 Premiere Napa Valley Auction Gallica

Gallica is an artisanal winemaking project founded, owned and operated by Rosemary Cakebread, one of Napa Valley’s most admired winemakers. Cakebread started her career at Inglenook, then worked briefly in Bordeaux before spending 16 years as winemaker and consulting winemaker at Spottswoode Estate Vineyard. In 2007 she offered her first vintage of Gallica, a Cabernet Sauvignon blended with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cakebread sources her grapes from growers committed to organic farming and sustainable practices. Gallica refers to the botanical name rosa gallica, a family of sturdy roses admired since antiquity for their fragrance and medicinal qualities. Cakebread also produces Suzuri, a Rhone style blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah Noir and Viognier. Wine Advocate’s reviewer has rated Gallica in the mid-90s and called it “one of my favorite emerging wineries.”
