RATINGS

100The Wine Advocate

...provocative notions of warm cassis, blueberry compote, blackberry pie and violets with chocolate box, licorice and menthol nuances plus wafts of wilted roses, lavender and kirsch. Medium-bodied, the intensely perfumed black and blue fruit flavors glide gracefully across the palate, revealing a myriad of earth and spice accents, all framed beautifully with super ripe, fine-grained tannins and invigorating freshness, finishing very, very long. Wow.

100Jeb Dunnuck

Ripe and sexy, with off-the-charts sexiness...jumps from the glass with ample red, black, and blue fruits are interwoven with tobacco leaf, spice box, flowers, and incense-like aromas and flavors...has a deep, layered, multi-dimensional texture, one stacked mid-palate, awesome tannins, and a great finish...shows classic Spottswoode purity, elegance, and balance. Don’t miss it!

98James Suckling

What a nose on this wine. So intense and powerful, with cassis, currants, and licorice. Amazing stuff. Full and very soft, with wonderful soft yet focused tannins and juicy fruit. Pure and beautiful.

95Wine Spectator

Smooth, rich and understated, offering a subtle mix of ripe, full-bodied currant, blackberry and wild berry flavors that are deftly balanced, with a dash of cedary dill-laced oak.

94Stephen Tanzer

Very ripe...shows a chocolatey ripeness to the primary flavors of cassis, blueberry and licorice. Densely packed and powerful, conveying a tactile texture to the sweet flavors of black fruits, tobacco and spicecake. Firm acidity gives clarity and definition to the middle palate of this very concentrated wine. Finishes savory, deeply spicy and firmly tannic, with terrific length and grip.

17.5Jancis Robinson

Smooth and supple, with intense cassis and subtle cedar and barrel spice notes...remains on the elegant side of the Napa Cab ledger. Firm acid backbone.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
