RATINGS

92Vinous / IWC

Ripe red berries, incense and candied flowers on the expressive nose, along with a smoky mineral accent that adds energetic lift. Sappy, appealingly sweet and lively on the palate, offering juicy cherry, raspberry and spicecake flavors, along with candied rose and white pepper notes. Smooth and seamless in texture, finishing with resonating florality, smooth tannins and strong, spicy tenacity.

92Wine Enthusiast

Deep black-plum sauce, cocoa powder, black pepper, dark loam and vanilla show on the nose... The flavors are deep and dark but full of energy, with white pepper and plum jelly riding a relatively lighter frame.

91Wine Spectator

Refined and well-structured flavors of dried red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are accented by notes of cedar and slate. Balsam and sandalwood hints emerge on the finish.

90The Wine Advocate

...open nose of crushed blackberries and black cherries, red cherries, warm cranberries, soil, underbrush and hints of citrus peel and dried flowers. Light to medium-bodied and concentrated, it has a frame of grainy tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long and spicy.

90Jeb Dunnuck

...rounded, spice, dried earth, and savory cherry bouquet as well as a medium-bodied, nicely textured, soft style on the palate...good acidity and ample charm...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a 12-mile long, narrow strip of an appellation wedged along the eastern hillsides of the Santa Lucia mountain range. Given its proximity to Big Sur and the Gabilan Mountain Range to the northeast, Santa Lucia a cool-climate wine growing district. Morning sun is often followed by maritime winds and fog in the afternoon, a weather pattern that prolongs the growing season and means long, gentle ripening of the grapes. Spanish missionaries planted vineyards in the district in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that modern winemakers planted vineyards and began making high quality wine. The district received AVA status in 1991 and today there are 6,000 vineyard acres in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape planted, followed by Chardonnay and Riesling.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
