RATINGS

100Jeb Dunnuck

...offers a kaleidoscope of gamey blueberries, crushed black cherries, forest floor, leafy herbs, and damp earth. Deep, massively concentrated, and layered on the palate, it has layer upon layer of complexity and texture, building sweet tannins, and a monster finish.

98+ The Wine Advocate

...notes of potpourri, oolong tea, Chinese five spice, hoisin and fallen leaves with a core of warm blackberries, crushed blackcurrants and eucalyptus. Full-bodied and powerfully fruited in the mouth, the black fruit and spicy layers have a firm yet velvety backbone and the finish is long and perfumed.

95Wine Spectator

Frankly ripe blackberry and boysenberry compote flavors form the core, with loads of brambly energy to carry it off, while lively tobacco, anise and spice notes and deeply embedded iron and loam elements build through the finish. Distinctive and impressive.

95Vinous / IWC

Rich, unctuous and flamboyantly ripe... Silky tannins and plush fruit add to the wine's undeniable raciness and overall appeal. Sweet scents of tobacco, smoke and cedar add the closing shades of nuance.

95James Suckling

Impressive aromatic depth here...wealth of cassis and blueberry aromas...violet-like floral and fresh-earth notes...palate has an array of ripe dark plums and chocolate in a powerful yet plush style. Super long, majestic and seamless.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Oakville, To Kalon Vineyard

To- Kalon is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, often called the first “grand cru” California vineyard. It has always inspired those who live near it. Native Americans called the area around it tu-la-halusi – meaning “beautiful land.” And later residents called it To-Kalon, Greek for “the most beautiful.” Originally planted by Hamilton Crabb in 1968, it today is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. Beckstoffer owns the lion’s share, with an 89-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beckstoffer sell To-Kalon grapes to such acclaimed producers as Schrader, Paul Hobbs, Tor Kenward, Realm, Alpha Omega and the Morlet Family. Beckstoffer Vineyards, a vineyard management business, owns and farms more than 3,600 acres of highly prestigious grape growing acreage in Napa Valley, Mendocino County and the Red Hills of Lake County. A senior executive with Heublein in the 1960s, Andy Beckstoffer is credited with steering Napa Valley vintners towards improving farming and the quality of the grapes used for wine.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon
