RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

Blackberry and black-cherry notes are marked by savory tones of bramble, licorice and wet earth...ample and opulent yet balanced by a fresh, mineral midpalate and firm, gripping tannins.

95Jeb Dunnuck

...tons of cedarwood, white pepper, kirsch, and blackberry fruits... Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, with the purity of fruit that makes this vintage so special, it’s a blockbuster wine...

94Wine Spectator

...waves of raspberry pâte de fruit, plum coulis and cassis flavors rolling through, flecked with mouthwatering anise, apple wood and rooibos tea notes. The long finish shows very finely beaded acidity embedded throughout, letting the fruit unfurl wonderfully.

94Vinous / IWC

Highly perfumed red and dark berry liqueur, incense and Asian spice aromas... Supple, open-knit and juicy on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black raspberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors and an exotic touch of five-spice powder. The floral quality repeats strongly on a smooth, impressively persistent finish that shows just a hint of supple, fine-grained tannins.

93James Suckling

Very impressive wine with sturdy tannins and plenty of upbeat, dark, punchy fruit on offer. The palate has a very plush, silky edge with ripe, red-plum and blackberry flavors, cast amid assertive, bold but silky tannins.

92The Wine Advocate

Hints of garrigue, black tea and allspice accent raspberry fruit in this creamy, lush-textured offering that shows good depth and a long, velvety finish.

16.5Jancis Robinson

...Strong, baked black cherry fruit, attractive smokiness on the palate with full body and good length....traditional Châteauneuf with powerful flavour and structure.

REGION

France, Rhône Valley, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the appellation, is a large area of nearly 8,000 vineyard acres centered around the picturesque town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Located in southeastern France just north of the Avignon hills, the name of the appellation means “new castle of the pope” and it is a reference to the 14th century, when the Popes of Avignon built summer homes in the Southern Rhone Valley. Today the appellation is one of the most renowned in France and its terroir is known for layers of small pebbles, called “galets.” The stones in the soil are thought to help store heat and keep the soil warm, which helps ripen the grapes. The stones also help keep the soil from drying out in hot summer months. In 1923 Châteauneuf-du-Pape was a leader in establishing the idea that AOC wines in France should be made only with specified grapes, and the appellation allowed 13 grape varieties to be used. Since then the rules have been slightly modified to include several more allowable grapes. Red and white wines are produced, though in practice about 97% of all Châteauneuf –du-Papes are reds made with a blend of Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Counoise, Mourvedre, Muscardine, Syrah and Vaccarese. The red wines of this appellation are prized for being big, rich, spicy and full-bodied. White wines of the appellation are made with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul and Picardin. Whites are floral, fruity and relatively full-bodied.
