RATINGS

97Wine Enthusiast

...shows a tremendous cassis aroma, with splashes of smoke, dried purple flowers and baking spice. The palate begins with a lavish entry of polished tannins that still have some teeth, providing tension that carries the dark fruit flavors deep into the finish.

94The Wine Advocate

...it sings of perfumed kirsch, warm black cherries, cassis and plums with touches of rose hip tea, eucalyptus, baking spices, violets and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a firm, velvety texture and loads of layers, finishing with a lively lift.

94Jeb Dunnuck

... This beauty boasts a fabulous bouquet of blackcurrants, melted licorice, cigar wrapper, and tobacco leaf, with more spice and dried flower notes... Deep, rich, full-bodied, and elegant, with beautiful purity as well as ripe tannin...

93+ Vinous / IWC

...presents a more aromatic and red-toned profile than the Cabernet Sauvignon, most likely because of the presence of Cabernet Franc and other blenders...

93James Suckling

...blackcurrant and forest-berry aromas blast out of the glass, and on the palate it packs a big punch of fruit and rather fine dry tannins...

REGION

United States, California, South Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez Valley, Happy Canyon

Santa Ynez Valley AVA is home to more wineries than any other area in Santa Barbara County. The appellation was established in 1983 and it includes a total of 76,800 acres, of which 1,500 acres are vineyards. Chardonnay is the dominant grape in this appellation, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. The appellation runs east and west with temperatures and microclimates changing significantly from warmer in the east to cool by the time the district gets close to the Pacific Ocean. In recent years Rhone-style wines have been successfully made here, and vineyards now are also planted to Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Mourvedre and Marsanne.
