2014 Premiere Napa Valley Auction Lateral Cabernet Franc

Carneros AVA, also known as Los Carneros, is at the southern end of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys at the top of the San Francisco Bay. The 8,000 vineyard acres are mostly planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which thrive in the district’s cool, marine climate. Carneros became an AVA in 1983 and it has attracted foreign wine companies along with local producers. It has been especially appealing to European producers of sparkling wines including the giant Spanish cava producers Codorniu and Frexinet, and the French Champagne house Taittinger. Codorniu in Carneros is called Artesa, and Frexinet’s Carneros brand is Gloria Ferrer. Taittinger calls its Carneros winery Domaine Carneros. The European producers also make still wines in Carneros.

This is a parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon. It most likely originates from Basque country. It is an excellent blending grape, known for making the exquisite Cheval-Blanc. Franc is a little hardier on a vine than Sauvignon, but drinks smoothly at the table.

The winemakers are Chris Condos and Marty Mathis. Condos, who grew up in a large Greek family of winemakers and wine merchants, studied viticulture and enology at UC Davis, His own artisanal label is Horse & Plow. Mathis, current winemaker at Kathryn Kennedy is Kathryn Kennedy’s son. He is known for his passion for St. Emilion-style Bordeaux as well as his pursuit of balance and quality. His wines have won numerous awards. Mathis and Condos teamed up a few years ago to make wine under their Lateral label, which is inspired by the Merlot and Cabernet Franc Premier Crus of St. Emilion. They source grapes from prestigious and totally organic Napa Valley vineyards. Only five cases of the 2014 PNV Lateral Cabernet Franc were produced.
