RATINGS

94James Suckling

Quite bold and forthright with ripe red and dark fruits on the nose and palate. Deep-set mulberry and plum fruits drive the finish. Dark chocolate, too. This has supple fruit flesh and also handy tannin definition...

94Jeb Dunnuck

...terrific notes of blackcurrants, spice box, white flowers, and hints of chocolate. Deep, rich, medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with sweet tannin, it's a beautiful wine from this estate that offers tons of charm and character...

93The Wine Advocate

...ripe, sexy notes of blackberries, cassis, smoked earth and hints of chocolate. Ripe, sweetly fruited, rounded and beautifully textured, with solid purity and finesse...

92Stephen Tanzer

... Smoky, spicy oak complements glossy aromas of raspberry, blackberry and licorice. Very ripe and plush...excellent density and surprising floral lift to the raspberry, herb and spice flavors...plenty of complicating licorice, menthol and spices... Finishes with firm but suave tannins and a rising whiplash of flavor...solidly structured Bordeaux blend...

91Wine Enthusiast

... Tightly wound aromas of wood spice, vanilla, black fruit, plum and coffee bean give way to full-bodied, palate-coating and concentrated cherry and espresso flavors that linger on the finish...

REGION

United States, Washington, Columbia Valley

Columbia Valley AVA is larger than some states. At 18,000 square miles, or 11 million acres, the appellation covers almost half of Washington State and a small part of Oregon on the south side of the Columbia River. Established in 1984, Columbia Valley contains numerous sub appellations within its boundaries, including Yakima Valley AVA and Walla Walla AVA, both large and important wine districts. Columbia Valley AVA, generally called the Columbia Basin by Pacific Northwesterners, is in the Columbia River Plateau, and the AVA also includes a section of northeastern Oregon. There are dozens of microclimates within this appellation of about 7,000 vineyard acres. Many kinds of grapes are grown in the Columbia Valley, though the principal grapes planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Eastern Washington experiences very hot summers and cold winters, and the northern latitude means that Washington vineyards receive several more hours of sun in the summer than California vineyards. Grapes in Washington therefore have time to develop significant tannins and overall ripeness.
