RATINGS

98James Suckling

Loads of wet earth and grape aromas with hints of stems. Old vine aromas of bark and moss. Full-bodied, sweet and structured with a big kick on the end. Very impressive. Exceptional layers of fruit and energy...stronger and more muscular...

97Wine Spectator

Lush and inviting in feel, with a beautifully creamy texture that lets plum sauce, blueberry reduction and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors glide along effortlessly. Notes of violet, anise and black tea are beguiling in the background before melding seamlessly on the finish. This shimmers with fruit, balanced by depth and spine.

94-96The Wine Advocate

...shows some impressive firmness to go with its fine concentration...admirable for its structure...fruit and mid-palate are nicely supported by moderate tannins...evolves well with air, easily showing vivid and fresh fruit...beautifully textured as well.

94Vinous / IWC

...very concentrated nose...macerated black cherries, boysenberry jam, orange rind...palate is beautifully balanced and very well structured...tons of grip...masculine and assertive...acidity is extremely well judged with layers of black fruit laced with graphite and white pepper towards the prolonged finish.

18Jancis Robinson

Ripe and pure black fruit... Sweet blackcurrant tea and a touch of dark chocolate, like chocolate-covered fresh black cherries and blackcurrants. Becomes more floral as it opens, wilder, more exuberant. Chewy, chalky rather than grainy tannins. Deep and rounded and long with a dry-tasting finish. A generous, full-bodied whole.

90Wine Enthusiast

A ripe, floral wine that has many layers of black fruits with a fresh touch of acidity...dense while also elegant and poised with tannins and fruit already in balance.

REGION

Portugal

Portugal is best known for its two legendary fortified wines, Port and Madeira, but it also produces significant amounts of red and white table wine. In most years it ranks around the 10th or 11th largest wine producer in the world. In 2013, for instance, Portugal was the 11th largest producer just after Germany. Wine has always been produced in Portugal and in fact the country was the first to organize an appellation system, which it did in 1756, nearly 200 years before the French set up their appellations. The highest quality wines are labeled D.O.C. for Denominaçào de Origem Controlada. Many of the most innovative winemakers today, however, are avoiding the appellation system, which they deem too stifling for modern winemaking practices. The Douro Valley is the nation’s most important wine producing region, and it is the capital of Port production. The Portuguese island of Madeira, located 400 miles west of Morocco, is the nation’s other famous wine region, having produced Madeira for export for more than 400 years. Many red and white wine grapes grow in Portugal, though the best known is Touriga Nacional, the red grape used for Port and, increasingly, high quality table wines. Touriga Nacional produces dark, tannic, fruity wines.
