Auction Spotlights

Every year WineBid.com participates in the Premier Napa Valley, a mid-winter barrel tasting and charity auction open only to members of the wine and beverage trade, and each year we purchase the best cuvee available. In the 2007 we purchased 2005 Ceja Pinot Noir, a terrific Carneros Pinot Noir made in very limited quantities especially for the event. Haven’t heard of Ceja Vineyards? You will. Located in the Carneros district of Napa Valley, the winery was founded in 1999 by the Ceja family, whose patriarch was once a migrant worker who left his family in Mexico each year to harvest crops in California. Pablo Ceja moved his wife and children to Napa in 1967 and in 1983 the family bought 15 acres in Carneros to grow grapes. Today the family owns 113 acres and produces wines that are winning accolades from the press. Ceja notes that the 2005 Carneros Estate Pinot Noir is “bright with dark fruit flavors and a silky structure.” Ceja wines have very limited distribution. Here’s a chance to taste Pinot Noir from one of California’s newest stars.

Here you will find American reds rated 97 points or higher by at least one major reviewer. Huge wines, solidly made, and on the same scale as the finest European wines. You will find cult classics, such as multiple vintages of Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate and Araujo, along with hard to find gems such as 2004 Schrader CCS Beckstoffer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Spectator 97 pts and 2001 Robert Foley Claret, which Robert M. Parker Jr. rated 99 pts calling the wine “A tour de force in winemaking.” It isn't all just Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Blends either. Some of the greatest Pinot Noir from Marcassin is here, such as 1999 Blue Slide Ridge, Parker 99 pts, and top notch Syrah like 2003 Colgin IX Estate, WS 98 pts. Other world renowned producers such as Dominus, Bryant, Chateau Montelena, Sine Qua Non and Paul Hobbs are represented too. These wines, quite simply, are among the best America has to offer in both taste and prestige.

A rare Magnum of 1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, Robert M. Parker 99 pts, is the center piece of this exciting group of wines. This Screaming Eagle debut helped usher in the prestige now given to America’s so called cult wines. These big, often over-the-top reds defined a style that became a world sensation and captured price points that were once only found with the most prominent European wines. Two decades hence, the cult status has started to fade while a solid reputation of exciting, well made wine takes over. Other wines from the same genre are included here, such as 1994 Bryant Cabernet Sauvignon, Parker 98 pts and 1994 Colgin Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Spectator 95 pts. For those looking for truly classic California reds, wine which the cults owe allegiance to, you’ll find ten vintages of Dominus Estate and three vintages of Niebaum-Coppola Rubicon. Besides all these exciting reds, you’ll see some white wine well worth the while, such as 1998 Bonneau Du Martray Corton Charlemagne, WS 93 pts and 2002 Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay, Parker 99 pts.

Recent vintages of Washington’s superstar, Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, are plentiful here including the 2003, rated by Robert M. Parker Jr. at a perfect 100 pts. He describes the wine as having an “awe-inspiring core of cassis liqueur, violets, blueberry nectar, black cherry syrup and chocolate.” Besides the Quilceda, you’ll find coveted wines from Marcassin, such as the 2003 Three Sisters Vineyard Chardonnay, Parker 96 pts and the 2003 Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir, Parker 98 pts, along with Sine Qua Non wines like 2005 Over and Out Pinot Noir, Parker 94 pts and 2003 The Inaugural Eleven Confessions Syrah, Parker 100 pts. Multiple bottles of 1996 Opus One are up for grabs too, which Wine Specator placed #2 on their top 100 list of 1999. Other big names here include Cardinale, Cakebread, Dunn, Rubicon and Turley.
