This extraordinary collection of classic California Cabs from the 1960s through the 1990s comes from the cellar of a long-time Napa Valley winemaker who acquired them all directly from their producers and stored them in St. Helena under pristine conditions. These are exactly the kind of mature California Cabs that The Los Angeles Times called “affordable treasures” in a recent article extolling the pleasures of these often over-looked, older, now highly drinkable Cabernet Sauvignons. Included here are historic verticals of Heitz wines starting in 1966 and Phelps Insignia starting in 1975, as well as every vintage of Phelps Eisele ever produced. More highlights include: 1974 Heitz Martha’s, Michael Broadbent 5 stars, in a magnum; 1987 Beringer Private Reserve, Wine Spectator 97 pts; 1974 Beaulieu Georges de Latour Private Reserve, Broadbent 4 stars; 1978 Joseph Phelps Eisele, Robert M. Parker Jr. 96 pts; and 1974 Robert Mondavi Reserve, which Broadbent rated at 5 stars and described as having “flawless taste and balance.” Here’s one more – the 1974 Clos du Val, which Broadbent rated at 4 to 5 stars and called “Medoc-like…a lovely wine with silky texture…elegant.”

If you collect Burgundy, you know that Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is the gold standard against which all other Burgundies are measured and that 2005 is a vintage that the critics already are already calling legendary. Jancis Robinson, for instance, wrote of the 2005 vintage that the one “dominant characteristic of these wines is their thrilling combination of ripeness and acidity.” All of these DRC Grand Crus earned raves from the reviewers. Here’s what Burghound.com had to say about the 2005 DRC La Tache, which it rated at 99 pts: “In sum, this is a huge but utterly classy and stylish wine that will undoubtedly go down as one of the all time great La Taches.” Wine Advocate rated the La Tache at 98-99 pts, and Stephen Tanzer gave it 96 pts. The other 2005 DRCs here are: Echezeaux, Burghound.com 94 pts; Romanee-St. Vivant, Burghound.com 97 pts; Richebourg, offered in a 6-bottle lot, WA 99-100 pts; and Romanee-Conti, Burghound.com 99 pts. Wine Advocate rated the 2005 DRC Romanee-Conti at 99-100 pts and Tanzer rated it at 98 pts, calling it “brooding, multi-dimensional.”
