RATINGS

94Wine Spectator

Floral, smoke and spice aromas lead off, with fresh berry and mineral flavors adding depth and dimension. This is elegant, with class and breed, unfolding its layers right through the lengthy aftertaste.

93The Wine Advocate

...comes to the palate with terrific brightness, lift, pungency, and verve; and finishes with vibrant spiciness, exuberant sheer juiciness, and admirable clarity. With abundant but fine tannins...

93Stephen Tanzer

Fat, sweet, lush and fine-grained; this really fills the mouth with perfume. The berry, pepper and mineral flavors are complicated by a saline, earthy nuance. Finishes with superb breadth of fine tannins and excellent persistence.

90-92Burghound.com

...more obvious earth and floral influences to the ripe red and blue pinot fruit that complement the rich, pure and detailed medium weight flavors that culminate in a dusty and mouth coating finish...

17Jancis Robinson

Round and quite light. Fresh with some bite and acidity. A little green. Edge of cocoa. Lots of fruit in the middle.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits, Morey-St.-Denis, Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays has a highly unusual story. The Morey St.-Denis vineyard was not elevated to Grand Cru status until 1981. The 22.1-acre vineyard had been a renowned Premier Cru in the 1930s and 1940s, but fell into disrepair a few decades later. Most of the vineyard was sold in the late 1970s to the Saier brothers, who replanted the vineyards. Today Domaine des Lambrays, owned by Gunther Freund and his wife, controls 21.65 acres of the vineyard. Jean Taupenot-Merme owns the remaining tiny parcel. The vineyard is the highest of all the Morey St.-Denis Grand Crus and it faces north and east. Clive Coates has noted that “the Freunds…have been unstinting in attention to detail to promote the quality of the wine.”

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
